Line of Life

Maiden Voyage Dance has commissioned artist Clara Kerr to create Line of Life, a dance, music, digital and live interaction which explores the our physical and emotional journeys through life with all its twists and turns and unexpected encounters. Clara worked with school groups across Belfast, Newtownabbey and Holywood gathering thoughts, drawings and responses and used these in the creation of Life of Life.
ARTIST PROFILES
Clara Kerr
Clara is a County Down based Dance Artist who trained at The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, achieving a 1st class BA (Hons) Dance in 2019. She has a background in Irish, Ballet and Contemporary Dance and has worked professionally throughout the UK and Ireland since graduating. Recent work includes ‘The Children of Lir’, an Irish fusion piece in collaboration with Denise Catney and ‘The Blacksmith’ a short piece alongside Trú for Arts and Business NI. Clara has also performed extensively including a two-month national tour with ‘Fairytale of New York’, and as an ensemble member in Northern Ireland Opera’s ‘La Traviata’.
She has previously worked with Maiden Voyage Dance on Match Make in 2020, SCULPT in 2021 and Turnabout in 2021 and 2022. Line of Life began as a Maiden Voyage seed commission and Clara is delighted to bring it to full production with the company.
Fergus Kerr
Fergus is a Belfast/London based video designer and technician who studied Video Design for Live Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Fergus has created video designs and worked technically on an assortment of projects, during his Guildhall experience and professionally, including music, theatre, installations, and architectural projection mapping. Fergus works across 2D animation, motion graphics, real-time animation, video systems, and media servers. Fergus is excited to be working with Maiden Voyage Dance for the first time with the piece Line of Life.
Jody Lahart
Jody is a composer and musician from Dublin who writes and performs with a variety of musical groups as well as for film and stage. Since graduating from the West London University where he studied Music Performance and Composition, he has worked on a wide array of projects illustrating his versatility across a range of musical genres. This is Jody’s first commission for Maiden Voyage.
Úna Hickey
Úna Hickey is a costume designer from Belfast. She completed a degree in Performance Costume at Edinburgh College of Art in 2006. Since then she has worked in costume for theatre, advertising, film, museum, circus, and dance both at home and abroad. Notable productions include Prime Cut’s I am my own wife (Costume Designer), Opera NI’s Riders to the Sea (Costume Designer), Prime Cut’s The Baths (Costume Designer), The Lyric’s Fire Below (Costume Designer), HBO’s Game of Thrones (Breakdown Artist, On Set Standby), and Stuber Pictures’ Your Highness (Breakdown Artist). She has designed and made bespoke costumes for Hillsborough Castle and Living History. Úna collaborates regularly with the drama department at Queen’s University Belfast and has designed the costumes for over fifteen productions and taught aspiring designers on the design module. She has taught dressmaking and specialist breakdown effects for costume for film as part of The Nerve Centre’s Screen Academies and Into Film’s Screenworks programmes.
