Maiden Voyage at Belfast Children’s Festival 2024

Call to Mind, commissioned by Maiden Voyage Dance, will premiere at The Crescent Arts Centre, Belfast, as part of Belfast Children’s Festival 2024.

Call to Mind explores themes of memory, perspective and the past’s influence on the present.

What unfolds is open to interpretation just like events and memories from our own past. Stories are shared and secrets emerge though the interplay between a trio of dancers and trio of musicians. Who knows what the truth or fiction in their recollections is but what matters is that individual points of view are seen and heard.

Call to Mind is a dance and live music collaboration created by Choreographer Sarah Golding, with Composer and Percussionist Steve Davis which takes initial inspiration from Harold Pinter’s Old Times.

Nicola Curry Artistic Director of Maiden Voyage Dance: “This dance and live music performance, created and performed by an exceptional group of artists, introduces the work of choreographer Sarah Golding to NI audiences for the first time. With intricate choreography, fast paced performance, and responsive eclectic live sound score, Call to Mind might just blow your mind!”

Caoileann Curry-Thompson, Arts Development Officer for Drama and Dance, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said: “The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is proud to be principal funder of Maiden Voyage who present their latest work Call to mind, at this year’s Belfast Children’s Festival. Call to mind is an exciting collaboration between leading dance and music artists, which sees Maiden Voyage continue to raise the bar when it comes to innovative and thrilling works for young audiences. This commission has been supported by the National Lottery players through the Arts Council’s National Lottery Commissioning Programme, a scheme that aims to support the creation and presentation of new, high-quality work from Northern Ireland. For many children, the Belfast Children’s Festival will be their first experience of live, professional arts and I would encourage all to not miss out on this exciting new work from Maiden Voyage.”

Call to Mind will be performed by dancers Gerard Headley, Clara Kerr and Michael McEvoy and musicians Steve Davis, Grainne Meyer and Jamie Thompson.
