Successful Move Fit Pilot Project

Move Fit 17-18
Our pilot project running across six groups in five North Belfast Primary Schools, as an after schools activity, culminated in the summer term.  Move Fit aimed to improve participant’s physical and emotional wellbeing and change attitudes to participating in regular physical activity. Coordinated by Aisling McCormick and Sandy Cuthbert and delivered by a super team of tutors including Sheena Kelly, Janie Doherty, Rosie Mullin and Aisling McCormick; the programme was a great success with 144 workshops taking place over the academic year.  The children’s groups put on a sharing/performance in their last workshops for their peers, family and friends, which was very well received by all. We had amazing feedback from the children, families, teachers, assistants and School Principals.

School Principal Holy Cross Girls Primary School:

‘Excellent programme promoting healthy living and self-esteem…the children are happy and expressing themselves in a worthwhile positive way’

School Assistant Currie Primary School:

‘It has been great for the children, they really enjoy coming to Move Fit, a great teacher, (they) are more physically fit and happy, becoming more confident in themselves’

Family feedback:

‘She thoroughly enjoyed Move Fit and it was fantastic to see her move well as she has co-ordination difficulties’

‘At the beginning (he) was very shy, I never would have thought he would participate in this group activity and perform the way he did today in front of a crowd. Thank you very much’

Participant from Holy Cross Boys Primary School:

‘I like Move Fit; it’s my favourite because you get fit!’

Participant from Lowwood Primary School:

‘I really love Move Fit because it is fun. I really enjoy dancing with my friends and when we do things in groups and pairs. I think I was a bit shy at the start but now I have learned a lot and feel like I can dance better!’

Move Fit would not have happened without the generous funding from Children In Need, Garfield Weston Foundation and Victoria Homes, the wonderful support of the schools, the high quality teaching from our fantastic facilitators and the joyous children themselves.
